In March 2006, York Region Food for Learning, in partnership with Canadian Feed the Children, launched an apple pilot program at 17 schools. The purpose of the program is to distribute apples that have been donated by Ontario Apple Growers to area schools, giving students access to snacks which will encourage better concentration in the classroom through healthy eating. In a few short months, the program has seen tremendous success with over 7,000 apples being delivered to schools on a bi-weekly basis.
