Each day, participating schools throughout York Region offer breakfasts, snacks and/or lunches that include fruits, vegetables and healthy whole grain items and protein to ensure kids are well-nourished throughout the school day. Your donation- which goes to buying food to feed students or for programs in desperate need of a fridge or other equipment to prepare or store food- will make a difference in the lives of elementary and high school students!

Why do Student Nutrition Programs need support?

The Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) provides “foundational” funding for student nutrition programs from both the provincial and national governments via our Lead Agency, Peterborough Child and Family Centres. Schools presently receive 5%-15% of their estimated food costs via these government grants, and must then fundraise to financially support the remaining food costs, as well as any required start up items, equipment or other supplies not covered under these grants. Your donation to York Region Food for Learning helps us close the gap between funding and costs, especially in school communities that may not be able to support the level of fundraising required to sustain a program for the entire school year.

What does it cost to offer a meal to a student?

Schools presently may choose to offer a snack (2 food groups) or a meal (3 food groups) to students. The average cost of a snack is $1.25 and an average meal cost is $2.00
